Developer guide

Ready for Google Play?

Updated 24 October 2026

Being on Google Play makes customers trust your app more, and from 2027 Google will expect every Android developer to be registered with them, even if you only share APK files. This guide covers what you need. You can list your app on Imminent X straight away while you work through it.

Open a Google Play developer account

  • Sign up at play.google.com/console with a Google account you will keep using.
  • Pay the one-time US$25 registration fee. You need a Visa or Mastercard that allows international online payments.
  • Choose personal (just you) or organisation (a registered business). An organisation account needs a free D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet, which can take a few weeks to arrive.
  • Have your ID ready: Google verifies your identity and contact details, and may ask you to confirm that you have an Android phone.

Pass the "12 testers for 14 days" rule

Personal accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test before the app can go public: at least 12 testers must have been opted in continuously for the last 14 days when you apply for production access. Organisation accounts do not need this. See Google's testing requirements.

  • Testers need a Google account and an Android phone. They must stay opted in for the whole 14 days. If someone leaves, the count drops and your 14 days may restart.
  • Ask testers to really use the app and send feedback. Google asks about your testing when you apply.
  • Need testers? Imminent X Studios runs a paid tester service: we provide the testers and keep them opted in for the full period. Contact us for the price and next start date.

Prepare your store listing

  • Upload your app as an Android App Bundle (.aab). Google Play requires this for new apps; Imminent X takes the .apk.
  • A privacy policy web page, even for simple apps.
  • The Data safety form, which says what data your app collects, and the content rating.
  • A 512×512 icon, a 1024×500 feature graphic and at least 2 screenshots. Use the same ones on Imminent X so customers recognise your app.
  • Your app must target a recent Android version; Play Console tells you the minimum.

Register for Android developer verification

Google now requires Android developers to verify their identity. It started on 30 September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and Google plans to expand it worldwide in 2027. After that, apps from unregistered developers will be harder for people to install, including APKs downloaded from websites like ours. If you have a Play developer account, complete the verification in Play Console; if you only share APKs, register in the Android Developer Console. Doing it now means your customers will not be blocked later.

Link Google Play on Imminent X

Once your app is live on Google Play, add its Play link to your Imminent X listing. Your page then shows an Also on Google Play badge, which tells customers your app has passed Google's checks too.
